Antony Price, Famed for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included several ensembles for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
