Crew Member Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She described the news reports and online discourse as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of outer space.
