Educator Slain and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, police reports indicate.
The armed faction stormed the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their living quarters, authorities disclosed.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now undergoing medical care.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
Local residents told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a group of female students into surrounding rural areas.
The authorities announced they had sent "additional police tactical units, together with army members and vigilante groups" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have regularly come under attack for weapon-carrying factions, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or leverage deals with the government.
The assault in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency troubling the locality, leaving families in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their daughters' safe return.
Protection challenge in the northern regions of Nigeria has escalated dramatically in the last several months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the violence.
