European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
