A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us verify the video.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
