The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – But It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined acronym surfaced a few months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This acronym is unique to Gaza, as stated by health professionals including child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has lost their complete family. But, there has been no semblance of normality concerning the genocide in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors returning from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations have stated that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials disputes these allegations, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, it seems, is what international harmony looks like.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza is treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Set aside the news that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Pay no mind to the evidence that aggression from Israeli settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the camp joy it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed peace has transformed into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
