The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Blocked Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Product
The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business alongside his partner, revealed that he will personally create the controversial product within a personal collection highlighting causes the company was prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Creators and Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing tension among the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed how the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur announced through an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol of support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, which mirror those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Activism plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that originally created in 2016 to support former political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Upcoming Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns that its independence was undermined following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked that "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to keep working within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he told media outlets.
