This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the same level as granting clemency to festive fowl, but the county's top official had her own presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the beginning of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a lengthy and joyful existence free from concern.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
